Govt to implement uniform formula for hawkers relocation: Dhar

The state government has announced plans to implement a uniform formula for relocating hawkers and street vendors across various locations in the state.
Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar told reporters on Wednesday that the same approach used in Khyndailad will be applied to other areas, ensuring consistency in the relocation process.
“We will work it accordingly. The same formula will apply to all the places. Let the time come but we will do nicely,” he said.
In Khyndailad, the government has initiated the process of relocating hawkers to establish a pedestrian zone and boost tourism.
Hawkers were provided with a shifting allowance of Rs 10,000 and an additional Rs 2,000 per month for five months.
Dhar emphasized that the department is working on a phased manner to address the issue of unauthorized vending in areas like Laitumkhrah and other important locations.
The Shillong Municipal Board has been directed by the Meghalaya High Court to submit a report on the number of vending licenses issued and vendors without licenses in the Laitumkhrah area.
When asked, Dhar informed that the government is committed to resolving the issue in accordance with the law and ensuring that eligible hawkers in Khyndailad receive Certificates of Vending (CoV).
According to him, the relocated hawkers have expressed satisfaction with the government’s efforts, requesting additional facilities such as electricity, water, and toilets.
“We have assured them that their concerns will be addressed, and efforts are being made to accommodate all eligible hawkers,” he stated.
Dhar further informed that the government will continue to survey and identify more spaces in different locations to rehabilitate hawkers.
