The state government has decided to soon handover the the Baljek Airport to the Airport Authority of India (AAI) even as it is exploring to introduce smaller aircraft to connect the state’s capital with Tura, the district headquarter of West Garo Hills.

“We have decided to handover the Baljek Airport to the AAI and that process is on,” Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma told reporters on Monday.

Sangma said that there have been some hiccups in the process because of the prevailing situation due to COVID-19 pandemic.

“However, very soon it (Baljek airport) will be handed over to AAI and we assure that the extension of the runway and the other activities that needs to be taken up, will be taken up,” he added.

The Chief Minister further informed that the government is also exploring to have flight connectivity between Shillong and Tura.“That is also on the cards but it will too early for me to say but definitely that is on our mind to have smaller aircraft between Shillong and Tura,” he stated.
