Power Minister James PK Sangma on Wednesday said the state government is trying its best to resolve the issue related to clearing the terminal benefits amounting to Rs 840 crore to the MeECL retired employees.

“We are hopeful that we will be able to find a solution to this (issue) at the earliest and in the meantime, we would like to tell the retired employees of the MeECL that the government is trying its best to resolve this issue,” Sangma told reporters.

His statement came a day after the Coordination Committee of Registered MeECL Employees Associations and Unions (CCORMAU) had threatened to file FIR against the state government for delaying to clear the terminal benefits pending for the past 11 years.

Asked, the power minister said this is an issue that the state government is very concerned about.

Giving some background into the issue, Sangma said the Meghalaya State Electricity Regulatory Commission has disallowed passing on of terminal benefits to the tariff and this has resulted in the MeECL unable to clear the terminal benefits of the retired employees.

“We have been studying this matter and this is something that has been referred to the Advocate General of our state for examination,” he said while adding that the department is also in discussion with the finance department.
