SHILLONG: The state government has finalized the time schedule for filling up over 1028 vacancies in the Meghalaya police.

This was informed by the Advocate General before the Meghalaya High Court during the hearing on the PIL here on Thursday.

The AG informed that the time schedule for filling up the vacancies in the police department has been finalized as he sought for more time to file affidavit.

His request was also granted by the division bench, which decided to adjourn the hearing to October 24.

Earlier, the state government in its affidavit-in-opposition had maintained that at present there is no major law and order situation in the state of Meghalaya.

The affidavit had stated that there are 2 Armed Groups in the State namely the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) and Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) operating in the State with the HNLC operating in Khasi and Jaintia Hills District while the GNLA in Garo Hills District.

“It is a matter of information that with the Leaders and top Cadres of HNLC taking shelter in Bangladesh, the strength of the Group has gone down in recent years and on the other hand with death of the Commander-inChief of GNLA in February, 2018 and the subsequent surrender of the cadres has wiped out the Group with no activities of the said Organization noticed in the recent years as well,” it had stated.
