Govt to examine proposals for teachers’ salary enhancement when finances stabilize: Rakkam

Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma has assured the state government will examine proposals for enhancement of teachers’ salary when the financial position stabilizes.
His statement came after the Federation of Adhoc School Teachers of Meghalaya (FASTOM) had recently announced its decision to take to the streets in protest against the state government’s failure to enhance the salaries of adhoc teachers in the state.
Responding to this, Sangma told reporters on Friday that the state government is not directly responsible for paying the salaries of teachers in grant-in-aid schools.
According to him, these schools were established by School Managing Committees (SMCs), which own the buildings and appoint the teachers.
“The government provides grant-in-aid support for teacher salaries, but SMCs are also responsible for deciding their salary structure…it is also the responsibility of the SMCs to increase or to pay their salary,” he stated.
“However, when the financial position is stable, definitely, the government is exploring and examining the proposal for enhancement of the salary. This is the demand of all categories of teachers across the state. If we decide for adhoc, SSA also there are 14,000 – 15,000 teachers, so it is not possible to decide at one go considering the financial position of the government,” Sangma added.
Appealing to the FASTOM not to proceed with their proposed agitation, the minister said, “Because government is finding ways on how to support them. As and when financial position is better, definitely government is exploring and examining the proposal of the teachers.”
