Govt to come up with structured process to ensure all students get admission: Rakkam

Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma on Thursday informed that the government has decided to keep in abeyance admission by educational institutions to come up with a structured process to ensure admission is given to all students, who have cleared the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC).
According to him, the government is also in the process of upgrading secondary schools to higher secondary schools across the state following the sudden surge in the pass percentage of SSLC examination at 87.10%, setting a new record—surpassing the last year’s 55.80% and pass percentages for the past 10 years.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma said the government does not see any problem in admission in Shillong as the pass percentage is normal every year at 70 to 80% but it anticipated that the problem will be more in rural districts.
“We are meeting with all heads of institutions. I will be meeting the deputy commissioners of the different districts in the Garo Hills region next week.”
He informed that the government is taking steps to upgrade secondary schools to higher secondary schools.
“We are encouraging and motivating grant-in-aid institutions to increase more intake and to introduce morning sections and in some government institutions, government will introduce morning sections,” Sangma said adding “We want to have a structured process as there will be additional 20,000 students this year. We are working on the modalities and formality on how to absorb all of them. We don’t want to see our students not getting admission.”
Informing that the admission process has been kept in abeyance, the minister said, “We are on the job and we have stopped the admission process in many institutions and after knowing how much students will be able to absorb in the districts – East Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi, Jowai. We are working out on a well-structured process so that we can inform the students that much can be absorbed here and there.”
Asked, Sangma said there are four more secondary schools to be upgraded to higher secondary schools – 3 in Khasi and Jaintia Hills and 1 in Garo Hills.
“We are meeting with them (different institutions) to discuss if admission is full, why not introduce a morning section or introduce a separate section. We will ensure all get admission in the state,” he stated.
