Govt to address issue of overbilling by smart meters: Mondal

Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal has assured that the issue of overbilling by smart meters will be looked into.
The minister made this statement after meeting with a delegation of the KSU, which had raised concerns about the soaring electricity bills in the BSUP housing complex in Nongmensong.
The minister has proposed a possible solution to investigate the issue by installing two meters side by side to compare the difference in electricity bill generation.
“See smart meter is being mandated by the Ministry of Power and all the states are implementing smart meters and accordingly we also need to implement the smart meters. The question of over billing will be looked into and if needed we can have two meters side by side to see exactly how the difference is coming. So this issue will be looked into,” Mondal told reporters on Tuesday.
He emphasized that smart meters are being implemented across the country to address issues like wrong billing, suppressed billing, and delayed billing.
“All these issues are taken care by smart meters. It is helping the distribution utility that is why not only in Meghalaya but entire country it has been mandated now,” Mondal said.
The minister assured that the issue will be discussed with the Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) upon their return from Delhi, and efforts will be made to resolve the issue by next week.
“This week, I am also going out for North Eastern Regional Power Committee (NERPC) meeting. So, by next week, we will try to resolve the issue,” he added.
Further, the minister also mentioned that smart meters will be installed in phases across the state, covering all consumer connections.
“Smart meters have been installed in many places not only in Nongmensong. Wherever the consumer connection is there everywhere it will be cover. We cannot cover 6 lakh consumers in a day or twoo. It will be covered in a phase wise everywhere,” he stated.
