The state government has ordered an inquiry into the poor arrangements made for the athletes participating in the 4th Meghalaya Games held in Shillong.

“We have ordered an inquiry into this (incident),” Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma told reporters on Thursday.

On Monday night, the chief minister had personally checked on the arrangements at JN Sports Complex after images of poor condition of players went viral.

Sangma however said that the other part of the story which one has to realize is that “nothing is perfect”. “This game is happening after many years and the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) has tried its best,” he defended.

The chief minister admitted that there were shortcomings while organizing the Meghalaya Games.

“But I think it is more important to learn from the mistakes that were made to ensure the people who were responsible for it necessary steps are taken.”

Sangma further requested people to not let this one incident overshadow the importance of the Meghalaya Games. “In the larger picture it is more important to move on. We have to realize that over 2,600 participants have participated and we have to realize that it is happening for the 4th time in 50 years,” he added.

He also stressed the need to focus on positive stories and concluded by assuring “Yes we learn from negative things, we need to improve things and ensure such incidents do not happen in the future.”
