Power Minister AT Mondal on Tuesday said the government is encouraging private producers to invest in hydel projects to boost the power generation in Meghalaya.

“We have notified our new power policy where we are asking even private producers to also come and invest because the way the demand is going up, we have got to see that energy is locally available at a cheaper tariff,” Mondal told reporters.

“I am interested in hydel projects as far as private parties (is concerned) because we will get 12% free power, so that is our entitlement, so no question of tariff comes in between,” he said.

Asked, the minister informed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with NEEPCO for the Wah Umiam power project.

“They (NEEPCO) are working on it but some land issues are there which till now we could not resolve. We hope that it will be resolved. This is the position with NEEPCO.The (land is) between Shella and Mawsynram constituency and it is for 85 megawatt Hydel power project,” he said.

“We are ready to sign MoUs with any party. Some memorandums of understanding (MoUs) are pending with the department,” he said while adding “Some are working on it, we are also working on it so let us see. Some MoUs are pending for small hydel power projects for the last 10 years.  So now they are showing interest to come and invest, so we told that as long as we get free power, it is okay.”
