The District Administration of East Khasi Hills District has instructed government employees who park their vehicles on the roadside to display his/her name, office employed and contact number in the vehicle windshield so that he/she can be contacted by traffic police in case of emergency.

This direction was issued on March 26 this year by the Deputy Commissioner to all the heads of departments in Shillong the capital city of Meghalaya.

According to the letter, the Deputy Commissioner informed the Meghalaya Government in compliance with the direction of the High Court of Meghalaya has recently approved the Meghalaya parking policy for Urban Areas 2025 with the objective to organize parking eco-system for congestion-free streets and promoting sustainable transport system to improve case of living in urban area.

The Deputy Commissioner said that Government has also constituted the Zonal Task Force consisting of Magistrates, Police, Urban Affairs Department, PWD, SMB and respective Village Authorities/Rangbah Shnong who shall be responsible for strategizing and planning activities to alleviate traffic congestion in their respective zones, addressing issues of on-street parking and encroachment of roads and footpaths due to street vending activities.

The letter informed that during the inspections conducted by the Task Forces, it was noticed that many offices having ample parking spaces within their premises are not utilizing the parking spaces optimally, resulting in their employees parking their vehicles elsewhere along the road, thereby causing traffic congestion, particularly, in Lachumiere area.

The letter appealed to the head of departments to review the available parking places in their respective office premises and ensure optimal utilization of available spaces.
