Govt committed to resolve boundary dispute: CM

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said the government is fully committed to resolve the age old boundary dispute with Assam.

Speaking to reporters, Sangma said that the government is very much aware of this issue but the boundary dispute with the neighbouring state is not an issue that cropped up just last year or two years back.

“This government is committee to ensure that we are able to take this discussion forward and hopefully will be able to find some solutions in the years to come. It is an exercise that will take time but the commitment is fully there from our side,” he assured.

The chief minister was reacting to a protest by members of the HNYM against the failure of the state government to resolve the boundary dispute with Assam.

The protesters were also prevented by the district magistrate and police from marching towards the state central library, where the celebration of the 49^th year of statehood was held.

Asked, Sangma however informed that he was supposed to meet the Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal in the month of March-April last year but could not due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“And now that the Assam elections are round the corner, so we will not be able to meet before the elections are done,” he said while stating that discussion will only take place after the elections are over.

On the alleged illegal encroachment by the Assam government by constructing a transit camp at Khanapara in Ri Bhoi district, the chief minister however said he would ask the chief secretary to coordinate with the Assam chief secretary and resolve the matter.
