    SHILLONG: The state Cabinet has approved the Meghalaya Charcoal (Control of Production, Storage, Trade and Transit) (Amendment) Rules, 2019 which prohibit industries from using locally produced charcoal in the state. 

    Talking to media persons after the meeting held here on Friday, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said charcoal which is produced locally will not be allowed to use in ferro alloy industries as they has to now import charcoal from outside the state with immediate effect.   

    He said earlier the existing provision in para 8 of the Rules allows that the source of charcoal only from registered producers, stockiests or from import.

    “Legally speaking, earlier using of charcoal from the state was allowed but the Cabinet has decided that we should not allow at all,” Tynsong added. 

    Asked, the deputy chief minister however made it clear that charcoal for local consumption is still allowed.
