Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has expressed optimism about the Shillong Medical College’s progress, stating that the institution is waiting for the Letter of Permission (LOP) from the Medical Council of India (MCI).

According to her, the department has been working diligently, and the chief minister has been providing thorough support.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Lyngdoh mentioned that the LOP is beyond the state’s jurisdiction to comment on, but she is confident that the college is ready to start.

The director of the medical college has taken charge and has been relieved from her previous position at RIMS Imphal.

The minister announced that the counselling for MBBS seats will be advertised shortly.

“If you ask me, are we ready, I will say yes. The director has taken charge and has been given the necessarily relive from the institution where she was earlier to this RIMS Imphal and I am confident that it should happen, we have till above the last week of September to mull over this but in the meanwhile, yes, counselling for the MBBS seats is going to be advertise shortly,” Lyngdoh stated.

Although she couldn’t disclose the exact number of seats allotted to the government of Meghalaya, she expressed confidence that the number will be similar to last year’s allocation, which was around 96 or 110 seats.

Regarding the appointment of faculty, Lyngdoh stated that the college had been short of faculty members, but significant progress has been made.

She mentioned that there have been advertisements for faculty positions, and the college is close to completing the required number of faculty members.

The minister noted that some medical colleges have started with fewer faculty members, and she is hopeful that Shillong Medical College will be able to start soon.

The minister mentioned that there is a deadline to complete the necessary preparations by the last week of September.
