The state Cabinet on Monday approved the Meghalaya Medical Attendance Rules 2021.

Informing this, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that the government has decided to repeal the Meghalaya Medical Attendance Rules 1981 by passing the Meghalaya Medical Attendance Rules 2021.

He said that the main purpose of bringing a new rule was to give a more structured approach to the medical reimbursements extended to government employees.

According to him, in the past there were a lot of grey areas and there was no define systems because of which the departments had to work a lot and in the sense that they had to go through every case in a different manner

He said there were also areas where because of non-clarity the expenditures sometimes were not within the limit that should be.

“Therefore, keeping all these factors in mind, the health department had proposed that new Rules should be made. Under the new rules, limits have been set on the expenditures in different categories as well as recommendations to follow the central government’s health scheme rates which are called the CGHS rates so that again the rates do not go beyond a certain point,” the chief minister mentioned.

He also added, “There were large numbers of areas which were not covered under the 1981 rules. So in the new rules, those areas are also going to be covered. This of course includes things like dental treatment, hearing aids, artificial appliances, kidney, liver transplant and so on and so forth.”

The Chief Minister also expressed hope that with the new rules in place, the overall expenditure on medical reimbursement will be more structured and will also be done in a much more controlled manner.
