SHILLONG: The state Cabinet has approved the amendment of the Meghalaya Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 in the form of an ordinance.

“The amendments have been proposed and brought to the cabinet and these will be taken up as an ordinance for which the cabinet has given its approval,” home minister James K Sangma told reporters after the meeting held here on Monday.

Stating that the GST even after more than two years of its implementation it is still evolving, Sangma however said, “Even after the first amendment has been made it was seen many issues still need to be iron out to address the tax payers’ grievances, to simplify the return filing system, to plug the revenue leakages and to further streamline the administration process.”

He said the decision to amend the GST Act was based on the GST Council’s recommendation. The state governments including Meghalaya have been asked to amend their respective GST laws and to notify the amendments to become effective from January 1, 2020, he informed.
