The state government has decided to postpone the conduct of the elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) to April 12.

Announcing this after chairing a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that the third phase of the Assam elections will be held on April 6, which also happens to be in areas in lower Assam and are falling close to Garo Hills region.

He said with that in mind, the polling of the GHADC, which is scheduled to be held on April 9, need to be postponed so that the logistics which includes security, manpower, and transportation – are looked into.

According to him, if the election dates of lower Assam and GHADC elections are too closed, they may not have proper elections in terms of logistics.

“Therefore, the cabinet has cleared the proposal that the polling date of the GHADC be shifted from April 9 to April 12 and counting will accordingly be shifted from April 14 to April 15,” Sangma said.

“This has been done mainly because of logistical challenges being faced because of the last phase of Assam election taking place on April 6,” he added.

Asked, the chief minister said apart from this decision, there will not be any change in the notification issued by the government earlier.
