Gaurav Gogoi urges BCCI to cancel India-Pakistan cricket match, citing national interest

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi has written to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), urging it to withdraw the Indian team from the scheduled match against Pakistan on September 14.
In his letter to BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, Gogoi argued that resuming cricket ties with Pakistan at this juncture would be against national interest, given the prevailing cross-border tensions and recent terror attacks.
“While cricket has always been a sport that brings joy, in the context of current India-Pakistan relations, such engagements should not be prioritised over national interest. Playing bilateral cricket with Pakistan appears contrary to the sacrifices made by our armed forces,” Gogoi wrote.
He reminded the BCCI of India’s diplomatic efforts to isolate Pakistan globally in the wake of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, noting that even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had emphasised that “water and blood cannot flow together.”
“Engaging with Pakistan at this stage sends a message that undermines the sentiments of the people of India, who stand firmly against any compromise on national security,” he said.
Gogoi also pointed out that Pakistan itself had refused to participate in hockey events in India, citing security concerns. “Resuming cricket ties under the present circumstances may dilute the seriousness of our national concerns regarding security and diplomacy,” he added.
The Congress leader concluded by urging the BCCI to take a “clear stand” against sporting engagements with Pakistan until conditions are conducive. “India’s stance in global forums and bilateral relations must reflect unity, strength, and the highest regard for our sovereignty and security,” he said.
