Despite the imposition of prohibitory order by the District Magistrate, West Jaintia Hills District, the residents of Khliehtyrchi Village on Friday night foiled the unloading of the garbage by seven dumpers trucks at JHADC’s land in Pangit, Khliehtyrchi and also compelled the unloading of garbage by three dumpers in Thomas Jones Road, Jowai.

The decision to use JHADC lands at Pangit as temporary dumping site was taken in emergent joint meeting of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council, District Administration and Jowai Municipal Board held on Wednesday.

Over 100 residents of Khliehtyrhci assembled at the entrance to Pangit to foil any attempt of unloading the garbage at the said location as the Dorbar Shnong Khliehtyrchi and its residents vehemently opposed the use of the lands as temporary dumping site by the Jowai Municipal Board.

The Executive Magistrates and the police personnel failed to enforce the prohibitory order imposed under Section 144 CrPC of assembly of 5 or more persons within an area of 2 Kms. from the dumping site at Pangit, Khliehtyrshi. The order also boasted that any prevention or obstruction to the dumping of garbage by the officials of the Jowai Municipal Board and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council in the District Council Land at Pangit, Khliehtyrshi will be dealt with as per law.

The Magistrates pleaded before the residents of Khliehtyrchi to let them use the lands for a temporary basis but they shouted in one voice “no we will not allow at any cost.”

The Magistrates decided to retreat and asked the dumper trucks to return to Jowai Town with the truck loads of garbage which was loaded since Thursday night.

The person who took the dumper trucks on contract out of compulsion unloaded three dumper trucks of garbage at Thomas Jones Road, Jowai.

Earlier, the Jowai Municipal Board attempted to unload two dumpers trucks of garbage at Moolamylliang in the lands of Damewanhi Rymbai but the two trucks met with stiff resistances from the residents of Elaka Sutnga and had to returned to Jowai Town.
