Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Thursday asked the Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma to furnish the names of NPP MLAs who are going to contest from other political parties in the upcoming 2023 polls.

Speaking to reporters, Tynsong said he would like to request the leader of opposition to furnish the names of such sitting MLAs who are not going to contest from the NPP.

He was reacting to the allegation made by Mukul that the majority of the NPP MLAs will not contest from the party next year.

Mukul while reacting to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s claim that seven rebel AITC legislators have expressed interest to fight the polls on NPP ticket, had however said, “Irrespective of what he (CM) says, a number of the MLAs from the NPP are going to be candidates of other political parties – that is a fact because I know the minds of many of the MLAs.”

He had also ruled out that such MLAs of the NPP will not contest from AITC but from other political parties.

On Mukul’s prediction that many sitting legislators will be defeated in the upcoming polls and that they will only be a burden to the ruling NPP, Tynsong however said, “As far as the election is concerned let him (Mukul) also think how he will survive because anti-incumbency happens everywhere be it MLA or be it MDC. That will be there and that we know but it depends on how you perform and work in your respective constituencies.”

Tynsong further stated that he is not a person who can foretell the “winnability” of the sitting legislators and other candidates as “it is up to the people concerned to vote. I can’t say anything whether sitting MLAs will come back again or not.”

“Therefore, election is election and I defer with him (Mukul) on that because he has given the prediction as if he knows everything,” the NPP leader said while reminding the leader of opposition “that in 2018 election, he claimed that I am coming back to be chief minister of Meghalaya but he lost ultimately.”
