Former Chief Justice of India Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud underscored the deeper meaning of freedom during the 79th Independence Day celebration at the High Court of Meghalaya on Friday,. Speaking as Chief Guest, he said independence is not only freedom from colonial rule but also internal freedom “freedom of the mind and spirit.”

The programme, held within the High Court premises, began with Chief Justice I.P. Mukerji hoisting the National Flag in the presence of judicial officers, court staff and dignitaries. Justices H.S. Thangkhiew, Justice W. Diengdoh and Justice Biswadeep Bhattacharjee were also in attendance.

In his address, Chief Justice Mukerji stressed duty over reward, noting, “Karma is in our hands, not the fruits of it.” He expressed pride in Meghalaya’s judiciary—its infrastructure, natural setting and efficient staff—while pointing to the need for further strengthening the justice system and reaffirming the judiciary’s commitment to public welfare.

Justice Chandrachud highlighted India’s progress in education, infrastructure and food self-sufficiency, citing improved connectivity between Guwahati and Shillong as an indicator of development. He called for nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit of the youth: “The future of India lies in liberating the energy of its young population and transforming it into self-motivation.” He urged young citizens to safeguard diversity and uphold inclusion and unity.

Praising the role of the institution, he said the High Court of Meghalaya is “a sentinel of governance, a bridge between citizens and the law, especially in a culturally rich state like Meghalaya.” Reflecting on the judicial function, he added, “Sometimes, just giving a citizen a patient hearing is an act of healing.”

The event concluded with a collective call from the dignitaries to build a just, inclusive and strong India—where diversity is respected and every individual contributes to the nation’s future.
