  • Flood situation improves in Assam, 13.99 lakh still reeling under water

    The flood situation in Assam improved marginally on Thursday with water levels of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries showing a receding trend, reducing the affected population to 13.99 lakh across 26 districts, an official bulletin of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

    No fresh death has been reported in the last 24 hours, the bulletin said.

    13,99,949 people from 2,545 villages under 83 revenue circles of 26 districts are under floodwater.

    The affected districts are- Cachar, Barpeta, Kamrup, Nagaon, Dhubri, Biswanath, Golaghat, Goalpara, Hailakandi, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Morigaon, Tinsukia, Nalbari, Dhemaji, South Salmara, Lakhimpur, Karimganj, Charaideo, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Darrang, Jorhat, Kamrup (M), Majuli and Chirang.

    Dhubri is the worst affected district with 2,41,186 population followed by Cachar with 1,60,899 population affected by the deluge.

    The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Neamatighat, Tezpur and Dhubri, Burhidihing at Chenimari (Khowang)), Disang at Nanglamuraghat and Kushiyara is flowing above the danger level at Karimganj.

    Rescuers of NDRF, SDRF and state police continued their rescue operation in the affected places.

    The authorities are running 189 relief camps and 110 relief distribution centres across the state.

    41,596 inmates sheltered in the relief camps while 72,847 non-camp inmates received food and other relief materials in the relief distribution centres.

    9,86,253 have been affected while 221 animals have been washed away by floodwaters.

    11 houses were extensively and 98 houses were damaged partially by the deluge apart from PWD roads, bridges, embankments and other public infrastructure.

    The authorities distributed 1269.38 quintals of rice, 230.1 quintals of dal, 74.12 quintals of salt and 5562.81 litre of mustard oil among the affected people.
