A four-year-old child lost her life, while her sister survived after a fire broke out and destroyed their house in Sahsniang B village, West Jaintia Hills District.

The incident occurred on March 17 at around 8:00 pm. At the time of the fire, only the two children were in the house. The deceased has been identified as Elisha Iakai, while her sister, Glorify Iakai, survived. They are the daughters of Itaima Iakai and Mewos Shadap from Sahsniang-B.

Speaking to reporters, Founder Syngkon, Executive Member of the Village, said the fire broke out around 8:00 pm while the mother was returning from the market. He stated that the children were asleep when the fire started, and Glorify Iakai, 11, woke up upon hearing the fire. She tried to wake her younger sister but, unable to do so, rushed outside to seek help.

The fire is suspected to have started from a chula. The fire brigade and Raliang police arrived at the scene, but by then, the house and all belongings had already been destroyed.
