Final phase underway in Rudrasagar gas blowout as ONGC targets snubbing wrap-up by Friday

ONGC is entering the final stretch of its high-risk operation to control the gas blowout at Well RDS#147A in the Bhatiapar area of its Rudrasagar oil field. The company expects to complete the critical snubbing phase by Friday evening.
Now two weeks into the emergency response, ONGC has reached a major operational milestone. Working alongside international well control specialists from CUDD Pressure Control, teams successfully cleared all remaining rig debris—including staircases, entangled cables, and structural parts—making way for unobstructed access to the wellhead.
“This breakthrough sets the stage for the snubbing operation, a key component in sealing the well,” ONGC said in a statement.
Engineers have already connected hydraulic lines to the existing Blowout Preventer (BOP) and activated the rams without triggering any increase in gas discharge—an outcome that validates the company’s pressure assessments and technical planning.
Preparations are in motion to remove the damaged BOP and install a replacement unit as part of the well-capping effort. ONGC credited meticulous planning and favourable weather conditions for helping teams stay on track.
Meanwhile, the receding water level of the nearby Dikhow River has reduced flood threats, easing logistics and site access.
