All government, provincialised and private schools under Kamrup Metrio district will remain closed for four days till September 24 due to extreme heat conditions.

In an order, the District Mission Coordinator of Sarba Siksha Mission (SSA) said the decision has been taken to safeguard the students from the ill effects of exposure to excessive heat and thereby ensure the health and well-being of the students.”

“Based on the reports received from the head of institutions of different schools under Kamrup Metro regarding various incidents of ill-health and fainting of students due to excessive heat and dehydration and with due approval from the district commissioner, Kamrup Metro, it has been decided that all government/ provincialised and private schools are to remain closed from September 24 to 27 due to excessive heat and rising temperature,” the order stated.

An unusual rise in temperature during the autumn season has affected Guwahati and other cities of the state following a lack of rainfall.

The mercury level in Guwahati city crossed 39 degrees Celsius on Monday. The maximum temperature was 39.5 degrees C in Dibrugarh, 38.3 degrees C in Tezpur, 39.1 degrees C in Silchar, 36.1 degrees C in Dhubri, 37.9 degrees C in Jorhat and 39.6 degrees C in North Lakhimpur.

Due to excessive heat and rising temperature, school timings in many districts have been rescheduled in the last week.

A moderate rainfall on Monday evening brought some relief to city residents from the heat but also led to flash floods in several streets. While the rain cooled temperatures, the city’s drainage system struggled to handle the sudden downpour, resulting in waterlogging and traffic disruptions across various areas. This combination of relief and inconvenience has become a recurring issue during the monsoon season in the capital city.
