On the second day of his visit to Assam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR), a UNESCO World Heritage site in Assam’s Golaghat district at around 5.30 am on Saturday.

This was the third visit of a Prime Minister to the UNESCO World Heritage Site since Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1957 and Rajiv Gandhi in 1988.

During his two-hour visit to the national park, Modi, donning jungle fatigue, a jacket and a hat, rode an elephant named ‘Pradyumna’ whose mahout was Raju, and passed through the safari route of Dagland and Foliomari area.

The entourage of 16 elephants followed the Prime Minister as he traversed the mesmerizing safari route.

During his tour, Modi had the delightful opportunity to feed sugarcane to three elephants Lakhimai, Pradyumna and Phoolmai.

Modi then undertook a jeep safari in Mihimukh under the Kohora forest range, making a stop at the Daflang Watch Tower to marvel at the breathtaking vistas. The Prime Minister was blessed with sightings of a tiger dashing past his path, as well as the iconic one-horned rhinoceros, wild buffaloes, deer, and a multitude of avian species.

During the trip, Modi also interacted with members of ‘Van Durga’, the team of women forest guards who are at the forefront of conservation efforts, elephant mahouts and forest officials.

“Kaziranga is known for the rhinos but there are also large numbers of elephants, along with several other species,” the PM wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Modi was accompanied by the Kaziranga National Park director, Sonali Ghosh, along with other forest officials and security personnel. Impressed by the dedication and courage of the Van Durga team,

Later addressing a public meeting in Jorhat, Modi urged the citizens to visit Kaziranga National Park and experience the unparalleled beauty of its landscapes.

PM Modi also shared glimpses of him feeding sugar cane to Lakhimai, Pradyumna and Phoolmai elephants.

“This morning I was at the Kaziranga National Park in Assam. Nestled amidst lush greenery, this UNESCO World Heritage site is blessed with diverse flora and fauna including the majestic one-horned rhinoceros,” Modi said.
