Existing deficit school teachers exempted from MEG: KJDSTA

The Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers Association (KJDSTA) has urged the state government to exempt existing deficit school teachers from the proposed Meghalaya Education Grant( (MEG).
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, KJDSTA president AM Lyngwa said suggestions of the association have been submitted to the education department in regards to MEG.during a consultative meeting chaired by the Commissioner & Secretary in-charge Education Vijay Kumar Mantri with deficit school teachers here on Friday.
“We want the government to give us assurance on our continuity as deficit teachers and that if MEG is implemented, funding for deficit teachers should continue. We were assured that the existing deficit school teachers are exempted from the MEG,” she added.
According to her, the post of deficit school teacher will no longer exist once the existing posts are phased out due to retirement.
Asked, Lyngwa said, “As an association, we want the deficit system to continue. However, they (government) have come up with proper justification (on the proposal to do away with the deficit system), which may be good in the long run.”
“The objective of the government is to minimize the categories of school teachers and bring them under one umbrella “MEG”,” she adding “The concern of the government right now is that there are still teachers who are getting meagre salary of only Rs 10000 or Rs 20000 salary and there are those who are getting up to Rs one lakh a month. Therefore, the exercise will address this huge disparity in terms of salary among the teaching fraternity in the state.”
Further, she informed that the benefits like the centralized provident fund (CPF) and pension will continue for both existing deficit school teachers as well as newly appointed teachers.
