Evening session in the works: Relief for left-out SSLC students in West Jaintia Hills

Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills, Abhinav Kumar Singh, on Saturday addressed the growing concern over non-admission of SSLC-passed students into higher secondary institutions in the district and confirmed that a proposal to start an Evening Batch Session is under consideration.
“We have already written to the Directorate for permission to start an Evening Shift. As per the report received from a student union, around 124 students are still without admission. If approved, this evening shift can accommodate up to 200 students,” Singh informed.
The development follows a decisive move on May 30, when the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) temporarily suspended its agitation after receiving a positive response from the District School Education Officer (DSEO), A.P. Syiem.
According to JSU, nearly 200 SSLC-passed students had failed to secure seats in any government higher secondary school in Jowai. In response, DSEO Syiem officially proposed to the Deputy Commissioner the opening of an Evening Shift at Kiang Nangbah Government Higher Secondary School. The proposal also includes the appointment of Assistant Lecturers (Arts) and non-teaching staff, along with the identification of examination centres to manage future board exams efficiently under the new shift.
“Once we receive confirmation from the Directorate, the plan will be rolled out immediately to ensure no student is left behind,” Singh added.
