United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate from Mawphlang constituency Eugeneson Lyngdoh on Saturday said fighting against two seasoned politicians is tough.

Lyngdoh, a football icon, had to jump into politics following the death of his father and sitting legislator (L) SK Sunn on September 10, this year.

He is pitched against two seasoned politicians – former Mawphlang legislator and Congress nominee Kennedy C Khyriem and sitting Mawphlang MDC Lamphrang Blah, from the NPP.

“It is a tough task (for me). They (Khyriem and Blah) are very experienced when it comes to politics but for me it is my first time. However, irrespective of that it is always a start for everyone and so I am looking forward to this journey,” Lyngdoh told reporters after casting his vote at the Mawngap-Mawsmai polling station.

The UDP candidate also expressed happiness at the high percentage of voter turnout.

“I am very happy that the people have turned up in big numbers. It just shows that they have a sense of responsibility for the constituency irrespective of who they vote for. It shows that they are enforcing their right to vote,” he said.

“Like I said over the 27 days that I have gone campaigning I found that a collective feeling that all the people in my constituency have got hope, have got faith and love for  the constituency,” Lyngdoh added.

When asked, the football star turned politician recalled the contributions made by his father and said, “He (Sunn) had done a great job for the constituency. I just feel honored to be following his footsteps and do as much as I can to fulfill whatever dreams he has.”

He also assured to serve the people better if elected as their representative.
