The Office of the Divisional Forest Officer, Social Forestry, East Khasi Hills, has orchestrated a vibrant celebration of World Environment Day, spanning from May 26th to June 5th, 2024 throughout the district. The celebration will culminate in a grand state celebration on the 05th June.

The ten days’ celebration includes a range of activities such as a massive tree plantation drive that spanned across the entire district, involving enthusiastic participation from schools, colleges, and the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU). Staffs of all seven Social Forestry ranges under the division and local volunteers throughout this week long observation, planted more than 10000 saplings across 50 locations throughout the district to comply with the theme of this year’s Environment Day – “Land restoration, Desertification, and Drought resilience”.

On June 3rd, 2024, the celebrations took a creative turn with drawing, painting, slogan, and essay writing competitions held exclusively for school students. The themes of these competitions revolved around the central theme of this year’s Environment Day. Students showcased their talent and passion, offering fresh perspectives on combating environmental challenges.

The participation of educational institutions and communities to celebrate this year’s World Environment Day underscored the significance of imparting environmental education from children to adults, thus nurturing a generation of environmentally conscious citizens.

The Office of the Divisional Forest Officer, in collaboration with various stakeholders, has demonstrated a commendable commitment to environmental stewardship. Such initiatives serve as a testament to the collective efforts needed to safeguard our planet for generations to come.
