The Division Bench of the High Court of Meghalaya has directed the Meghalaya Government to ensure free flowing of vehicles and no untoward incidents in public places during the Christmas and New Year Festival.

The direction was passed by Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Judge W Diengdoh during the hearing of PIL No. 14 of 2023 between Romilton Pahsyntiew versus State of Meghalaya and others on Tuesday.

During the hearing, the Court also listed the PIL for further hearing on 28th January, 2025 while the learned counsel for Pahsyntiew sought time to consider the report filed by the Government. The Court also decided to go into it in detail after the winter vacation.

The Court however directed to ensure that there is no encroachment of road space, traffic violation by vehicles, littering of the roads by construction materials and other rubbish in view of the ensuing Christmas festival and New Year celebrations,

The Court also directed roads are kept clear and traffic is regulated so that there is smooth flow of vehicles and movement of people who throng the roads to enjoy the festival.

Furthermore, the Government shall also ensure that no untoward incident takes place in public places.

The Court also directed the Government “to file a supplementary affidavit showing compliance with our directions on the returnable date.”
