Electrocution case in SWKH: KSU demands lifetime compensation, fence all transformers

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Friday demanded the state government to provide ‘life-time compensation’ for the 3-year-old child who lost both her arms after being electrocuted.

A memorandum in this regard was also handed by a delegation led by the president of the KSU South West Khasi Hills District Forwardman Nongrem to the Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Power Prestone Tynsong requesting his personal intervention.

The tragic incident took place at Mawkohphet village in South West Khasi Hills on April 21.

Addressing media persons after the meeting, Nongrem said, “We have also demanded that the state government through the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (MePDCL) should also compensate and provide all the expenses for the on-going treatment at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS).”

He said that the unfortunate incident was a result of negligence on the part of the MePDCL, which had failed to fence the transformer located near a school in the village.

Nongrem further informed that the union has requested the deputy chief minister to ensure that monthly assistance is extended to the child besides providing free treatment.

Meanwhile, the KSU has demanded the deputy chief minister to direct the MePDCL to conduct a survey of all unfenced transformers in the district and the state as a whole.

“They should fence all transformers especially those which are near the open space in order to prevent such incidents in the future,” he stated.
