In a setback to the Voice of People Party (VPP), the Election Commission of India (ECI) has denied the allotment of common symbol to the party candidates for the upcoming General Election to the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya.

The VPP which is a registered unrecognized political party sought allotment of common symbol under Para 10B of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968.

In a letter to the President/General Secretary, Voice of the People Party, the ECI informed that under Para 10B of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968, the list of Assembly constituencies is required to be submitted by five clear days before the date on which the notification of the election is scheduled to be issued i.e. 25.01.2023 in respect of the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya, 2023.

The letter said, “your request for allotment of common symbol to the candidates set up by your party for the upcoming General Election to the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya has not been considered.”

The VPP recently declared the Winnower’ or ‘U Prah’ in Khasi as its election symbol for the upcoming Assembly elections.
