The Election Commission of India has reminded political parties and candidates to avoid single-use plastic and non-biodegradable material in their election campaign activities.

The Commission has been asking all the political parties to use only environment-friendly material for campaign purposes since long.

The Commission on 26.02.2019 instructed that all political parties should take adequate steps and measures not to use single-use plastic as campaign materials (posters, banners etc.,) during the elections in the interest of human health and environment.

Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021 notified by the M/o Environment, Forest and Climate Change on 12.08.2021 has also been circulated to all CEOs asking them to bring it to the notice of all stake holders including candidates and political parties.

The NGT has also asked all concerned for close monitoring of Election Commission of India’s instructions.
