EC issues notices to four Meghalaya political parties before potential delisting

The state’s Chief Electoral Officer Dr BDR Tiwari has issued show cause notices to four registered political parties in the state.
The parties include Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM), Meghalaya Democratic Party (MDP), North East Social Democratic Party (NESDP) and Regional Democratic Secular Congress (RDSC).
The notices were issued after the Election Commission has proposed to delist these parties from the list of registered parties due to their inactivity in participating in elections since 2019.
According to the Commission, the parties have not set up any candidates in any elections to the House of People or State Legislative Assembly or bye-elections for the last six years.
Before taking any action, the Commission has given the parties an opportunity to make a representation or show cause why the proposed action should not be taken.
The parties are required to submit a written representation along with an affidavit from the President or General Secretary and supporting documents.
In the notice, Tiwari informed that a hearing has been scheduled for September 2, 2025, which must be attended by the President, General Secretary, or Head of the Party.
“If no response is received from the parties by the aforesaid date, it will be presumed that the party has nothing to say in the matter and the commission will pass appropriate orders without any further reference to the party,” he stated.
