The Eastern Regional Meeting of the Electricity Employees Federation of India (EEFI) has called upon the workers of all the power sector to join hands together to protest against the Central government’s power policy to save the power sector and save India.

The meeting hosted by the Assam State Electricity Supply Workers’ Union (ASESWU) at Panbazar in Guwahati on Sunday emphasised the capability and responsibility of the electricity workers to pose the strongest resistance to the anti-worker, anti-people of the BJP-led government in the Centre.

Delivering the keynote address, EEFI national secretary Sudip Dutta focused on the present scenario of power sectors of the country and explained the effect of the RDSS plan of the Centre for installation of  pre-paid smart meters  whose ultimate aim to privatise state distribution companies for the greater interest of corporate houses

He said it would adversely affect the common electricity consumers, especially farmers.

“Centre shifting it’s a responsibility to supply electricity as essential services at affordable tariff to business commodities for more & more profit for a private company, Dutta said and added that It curbs the fundamental rights to electricity as per the Indian constitution.

DVC representative Pranay Nayak narrated the bitter experience of the last three decades of privatisation of Odisha Electricity Board in the name of reforms & reorganization.

Nayak expressed his concern for the newly formed Central government’s move for further corporatising and unbundling into three new entities of post-independent India’s first river valley multipurpose project Damodar Valley Corporation.

Representatives of West Bengal and Tripura also expressed similar views against the anti-people power policy of the government.

For the first time, delegates from Meghalaya joined the EEFI meeting to strengthen the electricity employees of Northeast.

More than 100 delegates from West Bengal, Tripura, Meghalaya, Odisha and Assam and electricity employees from CPSUs like DVC, PGCIL and NTPC  affiliated to EEFI took part in the meeting.

The regional meeting was presided over by ASESWU president Nayanjyoti Chakraborty and convener of Eastern  Region, EEFI Jiten Nandi spoke about the object of the meeting.
