The office of the District Medical & Health Officer, East Khasi Hills, launched the District Level Stop Diarrhoea Campaign 2025 at Laitlyngkot PHC on July 18. The initiative aims to reduce under-five child mortality and safeguard children’s health through preventive measures and community awareness.

Sohra MLA Gavin M Mylliem attended the event as Chief Guest. In his address, he highlighted that 8% of Meghalaya’s total budget has been allocated to the health sector, underscoring the government’s commitment to making healthcare a top priority. He encouraged attendees to share the campaign’s message with their families and communities to ensure its success and improve overall public health in the region.

Mylliem urged community leaders to mobilise residents to link their Aadhaar cards with the Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) to access healthcare benefits during hospital treatments. He also announced that Laitlyngkot PHC has received an ambulance to enhance emergency medical care. Acknowledging the tireless efforts of doctors, nurses, ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, and ANMs, he praised their dedication to improving healthcare delivery despite numerous challenges.

Dr. J. Nongrum, Paediatrician at Sohra CHC, spoke about diarrhoea’s causes, symptoms, and treatment. She stressed the importance of preventive practices such as handwashing, personal hygiene, breastfeeding, healthy diets, and the use of ORS and zinc.

District Medical & Health Officer Dr. A. Kharduit underscored the critical role of routine immunisation and vaccinations in preventing diseases and protecting children’s health. She also highlighted the importance of regular health screenings for early detection of conditions like high blood pressure, cholesterol issues, and certain cancers.

The programme concluded with the handing over of an ambulance to Laitlyngkot PHC, followed by a blood donation camp.
