In a latest directive concerning bridge safety, East Khasi Hills District Magistrate Rosetta Mary Kurbah, IAS, has revoked the earlier prohibitory order on two bridges: Umpung Bridge (Bridge No. 5/5) on the Balat-Bagli Road and Timber Bridge No. 74/1 over the Dakni River at Balat on Mawphlang-Balat Road. The order was issued under Section 163 of the BNSS, is effective immediately.

However, concerns over the weak condition of two other bridges – Bridge No. 5/5 over the Umngi River at Umpung on Balat-Bagli Road and Timber Bridge No. 74/1 over the Dakni River at Balat on Mawphlang-Balat Road have led the District Magistrate to impose a load limit of 9.0 MT. In her order, she stated, “It has become necessary to restrict the loading capacity and speed of vehicles to avoid further damage.”

These new restrictions, aimed at preventing further structural deterioration, will remain in place until further notice. The District Magistrate emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that the orders were passed ex parte due to safety concerns.
