East Jaintia Hills observes International Day Against Drug Abuse at Sutnga

To raise awareness and honour champions working toward a drug-free society, the District Social Welfare Office (DSWO), in collaboration with the Deputy Commissioner’s Office and the Hima Sutnga Youth Federation (HSYF), observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at Sutnga Elaka Dorbar Hall, East Jaintia Hills.
The programme was attended by Sutnga-Saipung MLA Santa Mary Shylla, the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, officials from health and welfare departments, students, and community leaders.
In her address, the MLA acknowledged drug abuse as a serious issue affecting the state and nation, and appreciated the efforts of police, health professionals, and NGOs. She urged for more such programmes across the district to involve local representatives, youth, and traditional leaders in spreading awareness. She also encouraged students to say no to drugs, seek support when needed, and avoid stigmatising those in recovery.
Deputy Commissioner Shivansh Awasthi highlighted the government’s DREAM mission, which focuses on prevention, awareness, and rehabilitation. He shared that over 2,500 students participated in winter camps held across 15 schools, and that sports facilities like futsal grounds are being developed under DMF to engage youth in productive activities.
A drug-free pledge was led by Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad, joined by all dignitaries and attendees.
Key contributors to the anti-drug movement were also honoured during the event. Dr. J. Nongtdu, in charge of Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST), and R. Patlong, Programme Manager of MCSWA, were felicitated for their dedicated service in treatment and awareness.
As part of the observance, short skits on the impact of drug abuse were performed by Mega Fun and Syrleiñ Secondary School, Jalaphet. Students of Syrleiñ Secondary School, Jalaphet also presented a song highlighting the message of a drug-free society.
Winners of the Reels Competition were Mayal Bareh (1st prize), Rivaldo Shadap (2nd prize), and Jasmine Dkhar (3rd prize). In the Hashtag Competition, the 1st prize went to Hame Salahe, 2nd prize to Pynyoomiki Dkhar, and 3rd prize to Diego S. Suchen.
Speeches were also delivered by District Social Welfare Officer Rica Bareh and HSYF President Nangbah Nongtdu, who reiterated the need for united community efforts in addressing the drug problem.
