On the occasion of Earth Day, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) Meghalaya on Friday condemned the NPP-led MDA government’s apathy towards preserving the rich ecology of Meghalaya.

“Dear CM @SangmaConrad, Your disregard for our state’s environmental issues has dire consequences. The cost of your neglect is borne by us. Along with decreasing forest cover and water pollution, many problems plague us. Your sufferers, People of Meghalaya #EarthDay,” the party tweeted.

Given the state’s negligence towards its lakes, conservation of forest, and failed attempts at garbage disposal, the Earth Day celebration on tweets equates to a pathetic mockery, it said.

Can the Chief Minister answer where did the amount of Rs. 19.33 Crore public money meant for maintaining the lakes go?, the AITC asked.

Despite repeated directives from the High Court, the implementation of scientific garbage disposal in Jowai is being stalled, it said.

The river Umshyrpi is poisoned with biochemical waste, but the state bats no eyes towards its people drinking, breathing, and living among poison.

This government is robbing the state of its rich sources of ecological heritage. Mere celebration of the Mother Earth over crafted words is appalling, the AITC further asserted.
