Dhar to take up with Assam counterpart to ensure peace prevail at Lapangap

Deputy Chief Minister and Chairman of the Regional Committee for West Jaintia Hills Sniawbhalang Dhar on Wednesday said he would soon take up with his counterpart, the Chairman of the Assam’s Regional Committee to resolve the recent tension at Lapangap village, which falls under the disputed Khanduli-Psiar sector, while the two states are working on a permanent solution to end the age-old boundary dispute issue.
“I will talk to my counterpart, the chairman of the regional committee from Assam and we will take a call and ensure things are back to normal while we are waiting for a permanent border settlement between the two states,” Dhar told reporters.

Stating that the second phase of border talks is going on, the deputy CM said until and unless the border issue is finally resolved, the area will remain unsettled.
“When they (Assam regional committee) are ready, we will talk at any time,” he added.
According to him, Khanduli-Psiar and Block I are the remaining six areas of difference which are yet to be resolved.
The deputy chief minister assured that the government is serious to resolve the border issue. However, it will take sometime since it is a long pending issue.
Asked, Dhar said the deputy commissioner of West Jaintia Hills has submitted the report to the regional committee.
“The report of the regional committee will be submitted to the state government after we sit from both sides,” he added.
Dhar visited Lapangap village, which also falls under his Nartiang constituency, to take stock of the situation and assured the residents of adequate deployment of police forces for their safety and security.
“We want that there should not be any unfortunate incident. As of now the situation there is normal,” he said.
He informed that as requested by the villagers, the government has deployed adequate police forces to ensure security.
“Some of our people cannot go to their paddy fields anymore. We have instructed the deputy commissioner to have a meeting with the local people to resolve the matter at the earliest possible. They should not be disturbed while attending to their daily activities in their respective areas,” Dhar stated.
According to him, Meghalaya police and Assam police are still camping there.
