The areas under 29 constituencies of Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) will be subjected to re-alignment and modification before they go to the general election due in February next year.

This is due to the fact that the JHADC has received the approval from the Governor of Meghalaya to constitute a Delimitation Committee for delimiting all its constituencies under its jurisdiction.

An official correspondence was received by JHADC from the Meghalaya District Council Affairs department few days informing the former that the Governor acceded to their request.

The Governor directed the JHADC to amend the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils) Rules, 1951 to incorporate provisions prescribing the manner and procedure for the delimitation exercise in future.

The Governor directed the JHADC to constitute a Delimitation Committee with a legal element in it and its membership should be drawn from persons having experience and sound administrative background, including those with experience in political and public affairs.

The delimitation committee will frame its own rules for the conduct of its business and make provision for placing of the proposed delimitation bill in the public domain.

The Delimitation Committee would have to receive suggestion, objections, views and comments from the public.

The Committee should conduct hearings at designated places and make sure that there is consideration and disposal of suggestion/objection/ views and comments before submission of report.
