    The District Council Affairs Department, Meghalaya has directed the District Election Officers of the seven districts in Khasi Jaintia Hills region for instructing the Headmen/Dorbar Shnong under their respective jurisdiction to allow the public meeting of all political parties including independent candidates.

    This is as per an official correspondence signed by District Council Affairs Department Deputy Secretary M Shira Kshir on Thursday to the District Election Officers and Returning Officers of 29 Constituencies under KHADC in the districts of East Khasi Hills District/West Khasi Hills District/South West Khasi Hills District/ Eastern West Khasi Hills District / Ri Bhoi District as well as of the 29 Constituencies under JHADC in the district of West Jaintia Hills District and East Jaintia Hills District.

    The official correspondence to the District Election Officers and Returning Officers said, “In the interest of free and fair conduct of District Council Election 2025, you are requested to Instruct the Headmen/Dorbar Shnong to allow the public meeting of all political parties including independent candidates.”

    The District Council Affairs Department issued the direction following a complaint received from Voice of People Party General Secretary and Shillong MP Dr. Ricky A J Syngkon recently against some Dorbar Shnong and Headmen denying permission to the VPP for conducting meeting in their respective villages.
