DC Jowai & Officers travel by bus to reduce carbon footprint

Joining with the rest, the District Administration, West Jaintia Hills District, Jowai on Monday observed World Environment Day (WED) with this year’s theme “Beat Plastic Pollution” at Samanlang Pastoral Center, Lumbihsyntu, Mihmyntdu.
On account of World Environment Day, the district administration joined in reducing their carbon footprint, avoiding unnecessary waste, and reducing the use of fossil fuels by traveling to the venue in a bus arranged by the DC office for all participants.
The function was attended by the Deputy Commissioner, IAS, BS Sohliya, as the Chief Guest, in the presence of ADCs FB Basan MCS and MA Challam MCS, along with Assistant Commissioner, S Phanbuh MCS, who chaired the program and WK Kharbuli.
Addressing the gathering on World Environment Day, Deputy Commissioner, BS Sohliya, IAS, said that humans were the ultimate predators occupying the topmost level of the food chain and their existence is at stake if the lower supporting levels or forms of food chain are not taken with proper care. He also mentioned about the harmful impacts of plastic usage and urged people to reduce the usage of the same by using biodegradable bags (pla iew) instead. He also urged the residents to be accountable and take appropriate steps individually and collectively towards making our beautiful environment a better place to live.
ADC F Basan, expressed his appreciation towards the initiative taken by the District Administration under the leadership of Deputy commissioner, in limiting the usage of plastic – no flex, no plastic water bottle, no banner and thus setting a prime example on World Environment Day.
He also mentioned the LIFE mission introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Climate Change Summit 2021 at Glasgow whose purpose is to bring down Climate change and thus make sure that the Planet we live in is a liveable and sustainable one for future generations to come.
He also stated that several activities – cleaning drive, cycling etc have been taken by various line departments in the District to successfully implement this LIFE mission.
A presentation was also done by the Forest Department on the importance of the Wildlife Protection Act in the context of the recent birds known as Himalayan Griffon Vulture who have visited West Jaintia recently. Waste Management was also discussed by Dr. HH Mohrmen and a short speech from Pynbeit Passah NIC on the responsibility of a citizen to the environment.
Later, certificates were distributed by the Chief Guest to the departments and localities who took part in various programs on WED held earlier in the District.
The celebration was participated in by the District Heads from different departments, Waheh Chnong of Town Jowai, students, and college who presented their items such as short plays, cultural items, and welcome songs. ADIPR
