Dawki Land Port marks 79th Independence Day with tree plantation drive

For the first time in its history, Dawki Land Port celebrated India’s 79th Independence Day with a joint initiative involving the Land Port Authority of India, Bureau of Immigration, Border Security Force, and the local community.
The event, held in collaboration with the Regeneration Meghalaya (RM) project by Earth Tree Enviro Private Limited, Shillong, featured a tree plantation drive to beautify the port.
Dr. H.H. Mohrmen highlighted the importance of making the port—the gateway for visitors from Bangladesh—greener. The initiative, conceived by T.C. Chako, Regional Administrator of LPAI Dawki, culminated in the planting of saplings around the campus.
Speakers, including Sunny Donkurpar Mawiong of Earth Tree and Captain Dan Singh of BSF Dawki, emphasized community participation and echoed Prime Minister Modi’s call to plant trees in memory of mothers. Chief Immigration Officer P.S. Thombing urged citizens to preserve Meghalaya’s natural beauty.
The celebration included cultural performances by local children and youth, concluding with the dignitaries planting trees on the port campus.
