Cop blame expelled Congress worker for attack on MP Bordoloi; party demands neutral probe

A day after Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi and MLA Sibamoni Bora were attacked, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) demanded an impartial investigation and immediate arrests, submitting video and photo evidence to Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh.
Police, meanwhile, said the attack was led by an expelled Congress member denied a party ticket for the upcoming Panchayat elections. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Akhilesh Kumar Singh said the attackers had been identified and would be arrested soon.
Nagaon Superintendent of Police Swapnanil Deka named one attacker as Imdadul Islam from Bhuragaon, Morigaon district — a recently expelled Congress worker. Deka said a police operation was underway to apprehend him.
At a press conference in Nagaon, Bordoloi and Bora commended SP Deka’s swift action but condemned the attack, warning that such violence undermines democracy at both state and national levels.
Immediately after the attack, Bordoloi publicly blamed Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling him the “sardar of criminals” and vowing that the Congress would not be silenced. The police’s findings, however, offer a different version of events.
Separately, a Congress delegation led by former MP Bolin Kuli met with DGP Singh, demanding a review of law and order in districts reporting political violence. They called for tighter security for opposition leaders and asked that district SPs be held accountable.
In their memorandum, Congress accused the Assam Police of colluding with the ruling BJP during the election process. They allege police intimidation of candidates and obstruction of nominations. They claim the attacks were part of a broader effort to suppress the Opposition.
“Democracy demands that the ruling party respect the opposition’s right to function freely and fearlessly,” the memorandum read. “Sadly, in Assam, democratic norms are eroding while political violence grows.”
It warned, “If elected representatives are unsafe, the risks faced by ordinary party workers are even greater.”
