Minister in-charge Education Rakkam A Sangma on Tuesday informed the Assembly that the construction of the Science and Commerce College at Mawphlang will be completed in June, this year.

Replying in the Assembly, Rakkam said, “Classes will commence after completion of the buildings and recruitment of faculty and staff.”

He said the status of work for construction is 72 per cent.

The project was sanctioned at Rs 36.55 crore on June 30, 2017. Till date, Rs 14.815 crore has been spent on the project.

Mawphlang legislator Matthew B Kurbah however questioned if it is possible to complete the project in June since there has been no sign of work in that place. He requested the government to speed up allocating the necessary funds for the immediate completion of the project.

On this, Rakkam said that earlier the project was targeted to be completed in 2020 but it was delayed due to delay in handing over the land, releasing of the second instalment and the Covid-19 pandemic.

He however informed that only yesterday the second instalment for completion of the project was released to the implementing agency adding “Therefore, we are expecting to complete the works as per the deadline set.”

When Nongkrem legislator Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit questioned the construction of the project without official handing over of the land to the government, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said that the government already has the gift deed for the land at Mawphlang.
