Congress leader and former chief executive member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Pynshngainlang N Syiem on Wednesday filed his nomination papers seeking to retain the Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah seat in the forthcoming ADC elections to be held on February 21.

Speaking to reporters, Syiem has expressed confidence that the people of the constituency will repose their faith in him and ensure that he is re-elected to the district council.

“I am confident to win (the election) because I have contributed a lot to the constituency and also in the KHADC through the passing of the various Bills,” he said.

“We have brought necessary amendments to give due recognition to the functioning of the women and youth organizations in the village administration,” Syiem said while asserting the need to bring more amendments to fine tuning the various Acts in the KHADC in order to further strengthen and making them effective in the interest of the people of the region.

Further, the Congress leader said that his party is going to the people for seeking their mandate based on ten points which include the need to conduct a follow up on the proposed amendment of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India and also to ensure such amendments benefitted the indigenous people of the state.

He also said that the party also seeks to improve the functioning of the executive, legislative and judiciary of the KHADC if elected to power besides strengthening the financial position of the KHADC by improving its revenue generation to ensure employees of the council are not put in any difficult position in regards to salary payment.

“We also pledge to take steps for the protection and preservation of the environment including water sources by working in coordination with the traditional institutions and to promote and preserve the Khasi language through different platforms,” Syiem said.

“The party also assured to find ways and means to get financial assistance from both State and Centre government for development of the villages under the council’s jurisdiction,” he said while asserting the need to protect tribal lands located along the border with neighbouring Assam by working together with the Himas.

“We also want to further empower the traditional institutions as per customary practices and strengthen village courts and district council courts,” the Congress leader said while ensuring to come up with a recruitment policy that will ensure the private sector gives first job preferences to the local people.
