The opposition Congress on Saturday finalized the names of candidates for the two of the three Assembly seats, which will go for bypolls on October 30.

Addressing media persons after a meeting of the Pradesh Election Committee (PEC), CLP leader Mukul Sangma informed that the committee had considered all the recommendations made by the concerned block committees and inputs from the respective district committees of the party.

“After scrutinizing each and every application…the PEC has decided upon in as far as two candidates for two constituencies and in respect to the other constituency which I would not like to name, the PEC wanted to get some more inputs and therefore deferred the final decision which will be hopefully completed by today evening,” he said.

Refusing to disclose the names of the candidates finalized by the PEC, Sangma however said, “After this whole exercise is completed, the names will be forwarded to AICC for the consideration of the Congress president and once it is approved by the president then you will have the names and will be able to share with all of you.”

The bye-elections were necessitated after the deaths of two Congress legislators – David A Nongrum from Mawryngkneng constituency and Dr Azad Zaman from Rajabala constituency – and Independent legislator SK Sunn from Mawphlang constituency.

Asked, MPCC chief Vincent H Pala said he was asked to discuss as there is another candidate from Mawryngkneng who wanted to apply for party ticket.

“We will not send recommendation for Mawryngkneng seat until we discuss with them (candidates),” he said while hoping that by Monday Delhi will be able to take a decision on the candidates for the bypolls.
