Congress is ready to fight: Gaurav Gogoi takes charge with battle plan to retain Assam

Gaurav Gogoi, the new president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), kicked off his tenure with a combative tone, declaring at his induction in Guwahati on Tuesday: “This time, there will be a fight.”
Speaking at Rajiv Bhawan, Gogoi called on party workers at every level to rise to the occasion. “We will win this fight if we work unitedly and take responsibility,” he said, emphasizing the need for grassroots coordination from booth committees to Pradesh office bearers.
“This isn’t about personal ambition,” he asserted. “Congress is not a title or a post. I thank the high command for the trust, but I can’t carry this burden alone. I need support—from seniors, former MPs, and every committed worker.”
Gogoi outlined a roadmap to rebuild the party’s presence in districts where Congress has no elected MLAs or MPs, including Karbi Anglong, the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), NC Hills, Tinsukia, Biswanath, and Sonitpur. “There are workers in these areas keeping the flame alive. We need to support them and organize,” he said.
Citing the Bihali by-election as proof of what a united effort can achieve, he warned of time constraints. “We reduced the vote margin in Bihali. But we only have 10 months. If we don’t start now, 2026 will slip away.”
He paid tribute to party stalwarts like Bhupen Kumar Borah, Hiteswar Saikia, and Tarun Gogoi, calling their leadership a guiding legacy. “We must honour their sacrifices by building the party they gave their lives to.”
Gogoi also prepared the rank and file for tough political resistance. “If this government can jail our spokesperson Ritumoni Singh on false charges, we must be ready to face jail too. They will harass our grassroots workers. But we’ll endure with the blessings of the people.”
Positioning Congress as the primary force in Assam’s opposition space, he urged a broad anti-BJP front. “We ask all parties and organizations to unite behind Congress. We will recognize those who stood by us during tough times. Those who left and now want to return must be judged by the grassroots. If the workers accept them, so will we. If not, the door stays shut.”
Laying out his broader vision, Gogoi said, “Our mission is not just to criticize. It’s to free Assam from fear, from violence, from hate, and from communalism. We want peace and unity—not the BJP’s validation.”
He closed with a clear call to action: “Everyone has a role—booth presidents, mandal leaders, Pradesh office bearers. If any party has sacrificed for the country, it is Congress. Now we must live up to that legacy.
