The opposition Congress on Wednesday demanded inquiry into the death of a MeECL lineman, after he fell from a 132 KV tower while repairing the line in East Garo Hills district.

Lathinson G Momin (59) was rushed to Nongalbibra CHC from where he was referred to Williamnagar civil hospital. However, Momin succumbed to his injuries en-route.

“There should be proper inquiry into the incident and the report should be completed within seven days,” Congress spokesperson and Rangsakona MLA, Zenith Sangma told reporters.

He also demanded that there should be special operative procedures for employees who are directly in contact with transmission lines.

Sangma said that he was also informed that the deceased was working under an annual management contract. “The question arises how an employee of the MeECL can be used by the contractor for his work,” he added.

He said it is very dangerous that precious lives are being loss on a regular basis and all this is related to the management of the MeECL.
